Opportunity for All: ESEA Week of Action

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) is the landmark 1965 law that established the federal government’s prominent role in providing equal access to a quality education for all children. ESEA has been reauthorized, or updated, six times, the most recent being No Child Left Behind (NCLB), enacted in 2002.

There is widespread bipartisan consensus, both in Washington and in our classrooms, that NCLB is broken, and we believe that 2015 is the year that Congress will move forward on an overhaul of the law. This is why NEA has declared a “Week of Action” from Feb 16-20, when educators (that’s you!) will let Congress know that any re-authorization of ESEA must:

  • Provide an Opportunity Dashboard for students, families and policy-makers
  • Reduce high-stakes testing to allow time to learn
  • Remove the high-stakes decisions associated with assessments
  • Ensure educator voices are a part of the policy-making process
